 | Shooting press misrepresent BASC. | |
 | Inaccurate and alarmist reports have appeared in the shooting press and on email concerning BASC's position on lead ammunition. They misrepresent BASC’s position and the current situation. BASC would like to take the opportunity to put the record straight.
The facts of the matter are: - BASC is firmly opposed to any unwarranted attempts to further restrict lead shot.
- All other shooting organisations support this position.
- BASC and all other shooting organisations agree that the shooting community must be involved in discussions on the future of lead ammunition. Not to be involved is to lose our voice and influence.
- All the shooting organisations have been discussing the latest evidence on lead shot for some time.
- All the shooting organisations agree that shooting should be involved in the lead ammunition advisory group being established by DEFRA to examine scientific evidence on the use of lead ammunition in the UK.
- All the main shooting organisations are supportive of John Swift, the CEO of BASC, taking the Chair.
- The shooting organisations form the largest group on the lead ammunition advisory group. They include BASC, the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust, the Gun Trade Association and the Countryside Alliance. Other organisations will be asked to contribute in specialist areas.
The natural conclusion from this is that shooting is well represented and is united on this issue. What does this mean for the future of lead ammunition in the UK? Defra has chosen the lowest level of committee, unofficial and industry-driven, to give advice. - No political party in the UK has any plans to further restrict lead shot
- The current position of the Food Standards Agency is that the consumption of shot game is not sufficient in the UK to become a public health issue.
- There is a growing body of evidence that suggests that some birds can be poisoned by feeding on shot animals or taking up lead shot as grit.
- The group has been asked to assess the relevance of research for the UK.
- Nothing will happen in the UK for the foreseeable future.

 | Letter from BASC | |
 | In the past day or two I have received from the BASC a letter, requesting details from their members, who have applied for a firearms certificate from Sussex police licensing department and had conditions or restrictions applied to it, far beyond the police's remit. As I have spoken to a good many of our club members who have FAC’s for uses other than target shooting I know this to be a fact and what is more there are cases of renewals having similar restrictions placed upon the certificate or when a variation is applied for. So if you have made an application to Sussex police for a rifle for fox control or deer stalking in the last 18 months which resulted in a restrictive or unhelpful response by Sussex police BASC want to hear from you. Here are some examples of the thing they are after.
*Certificate conditions that restrict deer stalking activities to a high seat with or without conditions that allow the use of the same rifle for fox control away from high seats.
*Conditions that restrict fox control to high seats. *Supervisory conditions that are applied where previous experience can be shown i.e. you already use other rifles.
*Supervisory conditions applied to you existing fox rifle when you have requested a change of condition to stalk C.W.D. or Muntjac.
*Specific numbers of deer to be shot before supervisory conditions are amended.
*Letters asking for details such as photographic evidence, number of rounds expended, terrain, weather conditions, methods of carcass disposal etc.
*Any other unhelpful conditions applied or behaviour perceived to be unhelpful by you.
If you have an experience to tell BASC then please contact them on 01244-573010. Please quote “Sussex123” when calling or contact them via email at firearms@basc.org.uk Calls will NOT be recorded and all information is given in strict confidence. Regardless of whether you shoot game or not, divisive laws passed in one area of the shooting sports will have an effect on all of our sports. NRA or NSRA membership is fine but both the BASC and Countryside Alliance have a strong voice in parliament. BASC has a membership in excess of 150,00 alone, who all vote. The NRA and NSRA would be hard pushed hit 10,000 combined. Do not get me wrong they all do a fine job but it’s horses for courses and politicians listen to voters and their representatives. So your help in this matter would be appreciated by all shooters and if you are not a BASC member but have had a similar experience do let them know any way, then perhaps think about joining.

 | Bogus EMAILS! | |
 | Truth Squad! | |
 | Hello fellow shooter, After the latest in a run of shooting and gun related articles and politicians, of whatever party, prepared to ignore the views of shooters. I now have a considerable list of grass roots shooters and gun owners who are prepared to step up to the plate and correct the wrongs dealt us. Are you one of them?
If so, sign up for the news letter, this email is designed to keep you up to date with articles, news or prospective laws and rule changes. As a member of the Truth Squad you will receive an email detailing the problem and what needs to be done. In addition if you become aware of an item that would adversely affect gun ownership or shooting, send me an email with the details and I will send out the call.
It is my belief that the general media is hugely biased against gun owners and gun ownership. This is so clear that it defies debate. It's hard to get the truth printed or aired. But there is a way to do it, however, within the letters to the editor of many papers. Newspapers are still important today even with the high speed communications of the internet, but remember that politicians read the letters section to know what the public is thinking and saying. It has impact. Plus, a good letter in a paper can and will be picked up and forwarded around the world in emails.
Should you decide to that you wish to help, there will not be emails every day, week or even every month, just when your help is needed to protect shooting and firearms ownership by law abiding members of society undertaking all legal and recognised shooting disciplines. I do hope that you can spare a little of your time, when needed, to help keep your sport alive for future generations.

 | Just for fun? | |
 | In the past few months there has been a lot of talk regarding the government of this and other countries borrowing money. In the vast amount of cases this money has and will never exist. But what if it did? Just how much have the worlds leaders borrowed in real folding money. The U.S. is well over a trillion $ and the U.K. is not far behind. So to see a graphic representation CLICK HERE. As I say it's just for fun!

 | Banardo's update. | |
 | We here and others around the country were appalled, and rightly so, by the Banardo’s web based promotional video showing the hunting of children by people with firearms. There was a lot of positive action taken by firearms owners who contacted their M.P’s, shooting organisations and others who may be able to bring pressure to bare to either have the video removed or a disclaimer posted. The British Association for Shooting and Conservation in their quarterly magazine ran a two page article highlighting the problem video. As of the time of writing this, no article has been published detailing the outcome of the campaign to resolve the concerns of firearms owners. Well, if you follow the link (click here) you will see that the video has been removed and there is also a disclaimer that the video was not representative of legitimate hunters, sportsmen and women and firearms owners. The disclaimer was all that was asked for the removal of the video was a bonus. Whilst I do not use generalisations, I was unable to find anyone that was against Banardo’s or the work that they do, they did however all agree that the misrepresentation and marginalisation of an individual or group of individuals for the promotion of a cause, no matter how worthy, was wrong.

 | It's time to get started! | |
 | Within the next 18 months there will be a general election and whilst at this time the politicians have other things on their minds there is no room for complacency. The national press and media are quick to draw parallels with the terrible criminal shootings around the world as well as at home and place the burden upon legitimate sportsmen and women like you and me. In the run up to the election there are things you need to do but first and foremost you need to get involved. The most productive way to get involved is to get, and meet other like mind individuals to find out what is already being done. A flyer can be downloaded (CLICK HERE ) and printed or emailed to friends, family or acquaintances. When the election is finally announced, hopefully you will have a base network. This can be used to correct statements put forward by the candidates in your area should they attempt to mislead voters on issues important to our way of life and recreational activities. P.S. Sorry about the size but it should print on a single A4 sheet.
